The City Council unanimously agreed last week to build a $160,000 wall along the southern edge of the Country Club Estates neighborhood to buffer the homes from businesses along Peters Road.
The wall will replace a series of concrete barriers behind the businesses along Peters Road between U.S. 441 and Southwest 45th Avenue.
Homeowners said the barriers have been useless. They want to keep out vandals and trespassers and block views of the businesses and a nearby trailer park.
The funding for the wall will come from city gas-tax funds and city reserves, said council members. City officials are preparing to accept bids for the job.
Kathy Batt, who lives in the area, said the wall should help discourage unwanted foot traffic.
``We've gotten a lot of graffiti on the walls here,'' said Batt. ``We've got people who come and steal things. It's about time we got something permanent there.''
City officials promised to build a wall for Country Club Estates a decade ago but could not decide where the money should come from. The project wasn't eligible for community block grant funding.
The city previously built a wall along the eastern edge of Country Club Estates between Peters Road and Broward Boulevard behind a string of businesses on U.S. 441.
``I have no problem with walls. I just don't want to be the ones to pay for it,'' resident Richard Allison said before the vote.
Councilman Lee Hillier said the project will get rid of an eyesore in the neighborhood.
``We need to get rid of those concrete barriers. That is the most
disgusting thing you would want to look at.''
